Anti-Social Media

Hello and I hope all of you lovely people had a great Labor Day. This week was an exploration into social media for both business and personal purposes and how the two can intermingle. On a personal level I am not very active on social media, I stick to Facebook and Instagram. But on a professional level I have always had to be very active on social media. When I worked as a Relay for Life manager I was constantly on social media accounts for each event. Whether it was Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, or some others means of internet socializing it was my job to make sure I was constantly interacting with people who followed those pages. Although the American Cancer Society is a huge organization it does not follow in the footsteps of companies like the Wall Street Journal, who have bots manning their smaller social media accounts. The only accounts providing "real" human interaction are their major Twitter accounts like WSJ and WSJD according to an article from Neima...

We live in an era of smart phones and stupid people

Here’s a thought: if the invention of the cellphone was revolutionary then how would the invention of the smartphone be classified? This week I am back online to talk about how the rise of the smartphone has affected how we do business. Think back to a time before smartphones, even before laptops and tablets, now. If you were waiting for a “make it or break it” message and had to check your email, what were your options? It was not a possibility to check it on the go at that time. You would have to wait until you were somewhere with access to a computer and then check it at that time. An interesting fact about my family is that my parents were some of the first people to form an eBay account when the website started. At that point computers were not even hugely popular and our internet was dial-up so if you were on the phone you could not use the internet and vice versa. As the internet evolved eBay evolved with it causing my parents to adjust along wit...

“In God we trust. All others must bring data.”

Hello again, it is Christie and I am back this week to talk about how arguments on the internet affect our society as well as censorship issues we all may face in life. Would you believe that the commercial printing press was used for erotic novels 150 years before the scientific journal? Well, according to Clay Shirky in his TED talk about the internet transforming government you better believe it. Inventions such as the printing press, the telephone, the television, and now the internet were all thought to bring world peace. It was theorized that if communication among the citizens of the world was easier, then why would war even exist? As we can see from current events and history events the dream for world peace through communication was never realized. In fact, if you are someone who follows President Donald Trump on twitter, you know exactly how much the internet can feed into conflict. With the emergence of new technology and new theories the internet should be playing the...

A Reader Lives a Thousand Lives Before He Dies - But Where Does He Get That Material?

Hello and welcome to my blog! My name is Christie and I am in my final classes for my Master's degree in Strategic Communication. I have been working in the nonprofit industry for about two years but unfortunately I was very recently let go from my job. I am originally from the great state of Massachusetts. I am also a cancer survivor with a myriad of other health problems that I battle out of my way every day. I am a mom to two dogs and two cats with no intention of ever being anything more than the "cool aunt" when it comes to human children. This blog will be focusing on how media is ever-changing and evolving every single day. I hope to explore the possibilities and road blocks facing communication in the modern age compared to the past. Once a week I will be exploring the depths of my mind and also making the effort to hone my writing skills. Earning a degree in strategic communications will also heavily play into the writings on this blog as emerging media and t...
